My I Make A Difference Moment is about Carrie, a mother I began working with through our Advanced In-Home (AIH) program about a year and a half ago. When she completed AIH, we recognized that she would benefit from continued support and referred her to our Parent Resource Education Program (PREP). Because I had also transitioned to PREP, I was able to continue working closely with her.
Carrie has faced many challenges. She has experienced unhealthy relationships, is currently managing her own health concerns, and does not have stable housing. She also has very few people she can consistently turn to for guidance and encouragement.
Her caseworker and I have been two steady sources of support in her life. Our work together requires patience, clear boundaries, and honest conversations. I provide encouragement and practical assistance, but I am also firm when Carrie needs to take action to improve her circumstances or meet her young son’s needs. She may not always like what I have to say, but she listens and often thanks me afterward. Most importantly, she has told me that she feels safe with me and trusts me.
I do not know what the future will hold for Carrie and her son, but I know that having someone consistently in her corner matters. Being a safe, dependable person who helps her navigate challenges, strengthen her parenting skills, and work toward greater stability is my I Make A Difference Moment.
