I have been working with a family for 10 months. When I started with this family, it was mom and dad; their 2 children were placed out of the home. Mom and dad both had many barriers they were attempting to overcome. Including mental health, sobriety, transportation, employment, and housing.

While working with the family, both parents were involved in individual counseling and couples counseling and working with our Building Community Partners program.

After a few months of working with both parents, they split up; Mom no longer wished to participate in the program. Dad continues to work with the PREP program. While he has had some setbacks, he continues to work on himself to be the best father he can.

He told me at one of our recent visits that he really enjoys working with me and has learned a lot not only about parenting but also about himself. He has learned to walk away instead of continuing to argue; he is studying to take his driving test to get his driver’s license; he is picking up more shifts at work and trying to get his own apartment.

Dad told me that it’s really cool how I check in on him and send him rentals and job opportunities. I feel like I have made a difference in this dad’s life by building that rapport with him. He trusts me as someone who will be there and listen when he needs to talk, and to show him that it is good to talk about the things he has overcome and how far he has come in the 10 months we have been working together.
